The French were the first Europeans to reach this region during the 17th century and made friendly contact with the surrounding Indian tribes. In 1714, the site for Fort St. Jean Baptiste was chosen in this area and evolved into the city of Natchitoches along with becoming the oldest permanent settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase.
